Once nicknamed the \u201cIsland of Palaces,\u201d \u00cele Saint-Louis lines up 17th-century townhouses, quiet streets, and unchanged shops, while hiding\r\n behind its fa\u00e7ades deadly floods, decadent parties, hashish experiments, and political dramas.<\/p>\r\n

Along the walk, you\u2019ll discover why this small island honors Saint Louis, who came here to pray on the former \u201cCows\u2019 Island,\u201d and how its layout froze the Ancien R\u00e9gime society in stone: the quays for parliamentarians and nobility,\r\n the inner streets for artisans, merchants, and workers. Other townhouses include H\u00f4tel Lambert, Louis Le Vau\u2019s masterpiece passed from the Lamberts to the Rothschilds before being bought by Xavier Niel; H\u00f4tel Hesselin, demolished by Helena Rubinstein to build a massive mansion where Georges\r\n Pompidou would spend his final days; H\u00f4tel Chenizot, adorned with chimeras, satyrs, shells above the door, and a hidden sundial in the courtyard.
