Did you know that in old Paris, the profession of leech gatherer was likely one of the most dreaded of all? Mostly practiced by women, it involved standing patiently in the waters of the Seine until leeches attached themselves to the skin. Once collected, these leeches were then sold to doctors and pharmacists, who used them to treat a wide range of illnesses.
