Do you know the tragic story of Héloïse and Abélard?

In the 12th century, Paris became the setting for one of the most famous and heartbreaking love stories of its time.

Héloïse, a brilliant young woman raised by her uncle, Canon Fulbert, meets Pierre Abélard, a renowned philosopher about fifteen years her senior. A deep and passionate romance quickly blossoms between them—one that shocks society with its intensity and defiance of convention.

When Héloïse becomes pregnant, she is sent to Brittany. There, the couple secretly marries and welcomes their son, Astrolabe.

But Fulbert’s anger is relentless. Feeling dishonored, he plots a brutal revenge: in August 1117, his men track down Abélard and have him castrated.

Broken by this tragedy, Abélard turns to monastic life. Héloïse, in turn, enters a convent. Though separated, they remain deeply connected through a correspondence of remarkable emotional depth and intensity.

When Abélard dies in 1142, his body is transferred to the Abbey of the Paraclete, where Héloïse has become abbess—allowing the two lovers to be reunited, at last, beyond death.
